Students will read the novel and cultivate skills to:
-understand perspective and point of view
-cultivate evidence to support claim
-understand character motivation through inference
-gain empathy and understanding of others
Quarter 1 Unit 2 A Long Walk to Water (3 weeks)
Students will be forming evidence based answers and using skills to:
-support claim and justify written and multiple choice responses
-understand importance of credible evidence vs non reliable sources
-gain skills to debate and refute other people's logic
Quarter 1 Unit 3 A Long Walk to Water (3 weeks)
Students will be writing essays and cultivating skills to:
-demonstrate understanding of our novel and its themes
-fine tuning writing techniques and mechanics
-incorporate evidence based skills in a written format
Quarter 2 Unit 1 Lyddie (3 weeks)
Students will be reading the novel and cultivating skills to:
-gain mastery in comprehension based questions
-use multiple strategies to grapple with inter-textual vocabulary

-analyze language forms and the impact of figurative language on readers
Quarter 2 Unit 3 Working Conditions Research Paper (3 weeks)
Students will be creating a research based brochure to display their skills:
-articulately providing evidence to support a claim
-understanding of appropriate sources
-demonstrating the difference between paraphrasing and plagiarism
Quarter 3 Unit 1 Poetry and Frederick Douglass (3 weeks)
Students will investigate the life of Frederick Douglass in order to:
-analyze the meaning and significance of writings
-analyze the craft and literary techniques of Douglass and poetry
-compare texts with famous works of poetry
Quarter 3 Unit 2 Narrative and speeches Frederick Douglass (3 weeks)
